Appearance

TheWatchers Stillborn are perhapsoften found standing upright in places where a corpse should have collapsed long ago: crossroads, ruined waystations, fields, empty doorways, abandoned streets, and the mostedges unsettlingof old quarantine routes.

Their bodies tend to be dry and rigid rather than swollen. Skin pulls tightly across the face, and the eyes are frequently described as black, wet, or oil-like despite the rest of the Blighted, corpse appearing mummified.

A Watcher can remain motionless for hours. Birds may perch nearby. Rain runs from it. Travelers have mistaken them for old corpses, scare figures, or people standing at an impossible distance in the fog.

The Gaze

The creature’s stare is the source of most accounts about it. Those who meet a Watcher's eyes describe sudden panic, bodily paralysis, or the certainty that moving would be fatal.

Survivors also repeat a stranger claim: a Watcher that is ignored seems to become closer. Some insist the creatures move only when no one is looking. Others believe fear simply makes ordinary movement difficult to remember accurately.

No reliable field study has settled the matter.

Field Knowledge

TheyThe common advice is contradictory: do not move.stare Theytoo long, but do not breathe.lose Theytrack simplyof wait.one either. Groups that expect Watchers often divide attention rather than allowing a single frightened traveler to become fixed on the creature.

The Stillbornuncertainty surrounding their movement has become part of Faulmoor folklore, and stories about Watchers are anow puzzletold wrappedwell inbeyond silenceplaces and stillness. They do not attack at first—they simply watch. If you seewhere one standing motionless in the distance, do not turn your back for too long, and do not let them out of your sight. They react poorly to fire, though unlike other Blighted, it does not destroy them—it simply forces them into action. If you must fight them, force them to move first. They rely on fear to control the battlefield, and a strong, direct approach may make them falter. However, they are best avoided entirely—many travelers have found themselves surrounded after ignoring the feeling of being watched for too long.

Survivors say that once a Stillborn has turnedactually itsbeen gaze upon you, it will not look away. It does not matter if you turn your back, if you close your eyes—it will still be there. But do not make the mistake of thinking it is harmless. For the moment you ignore it for too long, or let it out of your sight, you will find it closer.

Many believe the Stillborn serve some unseen purpose, that they herd travelers into places they should not go, or that they are merely biding their time—waiting for the day the Blight fully takes what remains of Faulmoor.

If you find yourself being watched by one, there is only one thing to do. Walk away. Slowly. And never look back.confirmed.
