The Whisperer

The Lying Dead

“They don’t fight like the others. They make you come to them.”

OfThe allWhisperer is one of the horrorsrarest thenamed Blight has birthed, the Whisperers remain the most insidious. They watch. They listen. And when the momentIt is right, known theyless speak.for brute force than for deception. Travelers report hearing familiar voices from empty houses, fog-shrouded roads, collapsed ruins, and places where no living speaker could reasonably be waiting.

Appearance

A Whisperer can resemble an ordinary corpse at first glance. Its body is neveroften alone.comparatively Itintact, stands amongstbut the corpsesthroat, jaw, and upper chest tend to show the most severe distortion. Muscles around the mouth and neck pull in ways that no living anatomy should permit, and speech may continue even when the rest of the fallen—sometimesbody appears motionless.

Witnesses disagree about whether every Whisperer looks the same from moment to moment. Some accounts describe dead faces seeming briefly alive, familiar, or simply different from what was seen seconds earlier. Others describe the creature vanishing from sight altogether before reappearing nearby. These reports are difficult to verify, but they are common enough to be taken seriously.

Mimicry

Whisperers imitate human voices with disturbing accuracy. The voice may belong to someone the creature knew in life, someone it recently heard, or a person familiar to the ruinslistener. Calls for help are common. So are names, private phrases, crying, coughing, and the sound of aan burnedinjured homestead, traveler sometimestrying onnot theto outskirtsbe ofheard.

The deception is not limited to a once-thrivingsingle village, voice. waitingSurvivors likehave areported vulturesounds in human form. But unlike scavengers, it does not pick at remains—it creates them.

When a traveler strays too near, the Whisperer mimics a voice from its past life. Perhaps it was a husband, a wife, a child—perhaps it was a guard, begging for help. And so it begins. Soft, uncertain calls echocoming from the fog, wrong carrieddirection, onvoices seeming to move through a building, and a single Whisperer creating the windimpression likethat theseveral finalpeople gaspsare of a dying man. The closer one gets, the clearer the voice becomes. And then, when the traveler finally steps too near, the Whisperer lunges—no longer whispering, but screaming.

Above all else, do not allow yourself to be surrounded. A Whisperer rarely works alone, and where one calls, others may be waiting in silence.

Those who have encountered these wretches and survived say the worst part is not their attack, nor their ghastly, rotted forms, but the fact that they keep speaking, even after they are slain. Severed heads still murmur to themselves, repeating names long forgotten, whispering secrets that no one should have to hear.
