Silver and its Importance in the Festering Lands
Silver has changed from ordinary wealth into one of Norvostra's most important survival resources. It is the only material widely known to permanently disrupt fully turned Blighted creatures, making it at once a weapon material, emergency reserve, political asset, religious symbol, and target for theft.
Everyday Importance
Before the Rotmire Blight, silver circulated as coin, ornament, sacred material, and stored wealth. In the second year of the Blight, households, soldiers, smiths, smugglers, and nobles increasingly treat usable silver as something closer to ammunition.
The change is visible at household scale. A coin can become weapon material, an heirloom can become an emergency reserve, and a silvered blade can be worth more to a frightened family than the wealth represented by the metal itself.
Across affected regions, old coinage and household silver are melted down, silvered weapons are guarded more closely than ordinary valuables, and metalworkers capable of preparing or applying silver have become strategically important.
Counterfeit silver, falsely advertised weapons, scavenging expeditions, and black-market trafficking have followed naturally. Possessing silver can offer protection while making the bearer a tempting target.
Politics and Scarcity
The greatest political consequence of silver scarcity is the rise of House Harrowden and Fenmire. Control of the Thornmere Mines turned a once peripheral marsh domain into territory every major power in Faulmoor must take seriously.
House Valkenmar needs silver for defense. House Wilthorne depends on access to trade and supply. Harrowden controls the resource both houses require.
Rumors that the Thornmere veins are failing are widespread. Other accounts claim scarcity is being exaggerated for political leverage. The truth is not publicly settled.
Belief and Folk Practice
People commonly say silver burns the Blight out, protects doorways, purifies wounds, or wards corruption. Some of these beliefs grow from its demonstrated effectiveness against Blighted creatures. Others are superstition, religious interpretation, or improvised field medicine.
Silver filings, charms, slivers, and household rituals therefore appear throughout Norvostra even where their claimed protective effects are uncertain.
Current Mechanics
The campaign's live In-Game Mechanics page remains the authority for exact silver rules.
At the current review:
- silvered weapons deal +1d8 damage against Rotmire-infected creatures;
- actual silver coinage is tracked separately from ordinary Iron Bits or “Clinkers”;
- 1 actual Silver Coin = 5 gp;
- a Tiny ingot is 0.5 lb / 25 silver coins, a Small ingot is 1 lb / 50 silver coins, and a Standard ingot is 5 lb / 250 silver coins;
- silvering weapons and ammunition carries both a silver-material requirement and a labor cost under the live rules.
